I'm newly diagnosed with CD and am having some real ups and downs - both emotionally and as I figure out what I can eat and more importantly - what I can't.
I just want to feel good and normal again! Can someone please tell me if that will happen? I feel so trapped and isolated - even though I am very lucky to have a loving family and supportive husband (and two small children).

If anyone is still searching for a great GF sandwich bread, this is it. Called " Jennifer's Original", it holds up, and is not grainy/crumbly at all! It tastes just like French Bread, with White rice flour and Tapioca starch the first two ingredients.

I got a message from Sue, who says that a new fish & chips shop, called Deep Blue, has opened on Broadview just steps south of the Danforth (on the east side). They have a GF & lactose-free batter. She adds: "It looks like a separate fryer but I didn’t check it out but hope to soon."

A couple of things made our visit better than ever.
We went for lunch rather than dinner which seemed to mean that there was lots of gf pizza dough available (the last 3 times, no pizza dough at dinner time - which was okay but really kind of a letdown for the kids).
Next year, I'm thinking I will book our visit ahead to make sure we can definitely get that pizza though.

I recently dined at Soul Food on Lansdowne Street just north of Bloor. Our sever (I think the co-owner) was aware of gluten and was able to let me know which dishes were OK. There was a good choice of GF food. The good news is that the jerk chicken is free of soy sauce. Most other Caribbean places seem to use soy sauce in their jerk chicken dishes.
The menu is described as St Lucian-flavoured Caribbean foods. The food was delicious and very filling. There was a steady flow of customers, many of whom appeared to be regulars. I would recommend this place and i will definitely return.

I was so disappointed when I was there on Saturday that they were sold out of it. Bummer.
When you go to get some, try calling first to make sure they have it in.
If you don't live in the east-end, it IS worth the trip!! The Big Carrot is on Danforth near Logan Ave.
I am gluten free, and my hubby is also (celiac).
Since I have actually cut wheat out of my diet I find myself with so much more energy- enough for me, and in turn makes me that much more in tune with food choices I make.
More and more I find that there are better choices, gastronomicly delicious choices that I discover, and would not have thought about, were it not for my awareness. I have worked in many restaurants and find no reason why we should not enjoy these culinary delights at home, with a few adjustments...!
I look forward to posting about great finds (GF breads and products), great recipes( that are adjusted food favorites to suit our GF lifestyle) and great links ( of which there are many).

I have tried a great product which is Gluten Free, Wheat Free and Yeast Free and I wanted to share it. Although I didn't see the celiac seal on the packaging, I heard another company in Ottawa was producing this product before and they had a seal. It's really delicious. The name of the product is Cheesten and I bought at St Clair in Toronto. Have anyone tried this product before?

I've gone past this place a hundred times, if once, and I keep meaning to stop in. They offer gluten free of course, as well as vegan and vegetarian. They bill themselves as an 'Eco-bistro' and opened to rave reviews in fall 2005. I don't know if that's the case any more, as the Chef has since moved on and opened New World Organics, a bakery at Main and Gerrard (they have two gluten free items, and please ask for more). At any rate, Le Cafe Vert is worth checking out, on the sole premise it's one more place for Celiacs to eat at. : )
I'll be eating here in a couple of weeks, so I'll post more then. However, here's what I know so far. After chatting with Ruben (at The Burger Shoppe) I found out that gluten free can be done at Pomegranate. That's about all I know so far. He was very helpful when I asked, and I'm really looking forward to eating there.
Unlike every other burger place out there, The Burger Shoppe knows what it's doing. (Keep in mind I am completely biased : ). The Classic Beef Burger, Shoppe Burger, Cheese Burger, Organic Beef and Chick(en) Burger are all just meat. No fillers, no coatings, only some kosher salt and black pepper. To make it even better, they offer a gluten free hamburger bun, that is always available and oh so yummy! The fries are cut in house and are definitely worth it. The milkshakes, Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla Bean are made with ice cream from Ed's Real Scoop in the Beaches and I have had the honour of reading the actually recipes for said ice cream to ensure that they are gluten free. It's the best ice cream ever! The only things that aren't gluten free are the Veggie Burger (which could change), the gravy, onion rings and brownies. The staff all know at least a little about gluten free, and are quite happy to accommodate you. Also, ask the staff if there is any gluten free goodies around -there just might be : ).

"The entire menu--soups, salads, rice baguette, crepes, cookies and cupcakes-- is gluten-free and vegetarian-- and many items were also vegan. I ordered their wonderful lunch special which had a selection of all 7 of their salads, a soup of the day and rice bread. Everything there was fresh and delicious! I can't recommend this cafe enough! I hope that other celiacs in Toronto love it too!"

Big Momma's Boy is located in Cabbagetown (Wellesley and Parliament) 554 Parliament Street.
I've tried pizza from Magic Oven and Il Fornello and hands down I have to award Big Momma's Boy the first prize for best gluten free pizza in the city.
It's a thin crust. I don't know what they put in it but it melts in your mouth, it's very savoury and delicious. They also have a huge range of specialty pizzas and loads of gourmet toppings, alot of them are organic from a local farm.
My sister (who's a celiac) and I (a gluten intolerant/lactose intolerant) were really impressed with the option of being able to have your pizza gluten and lactose free. I think the big thing for us was this didn't taste like your typical gluten free baked food...it tasted like a regular thin crust pizza.
They also have alot of other gluten free meals on their menu.
Having those gluten free options combined with the cozy homey atmosphere, I highly recommend this place....in fact, I would highly recommend this place for the pizza alone.

The allergy information guide seems comprehensive (it includes nuts, dairy, eggs, fish, shellfish, soy, wheat & glutens, sesame, and sulphites) but you may want to make further inquires when you arrive. I ordered take out once, and, when I mentioned gluten, the staff member instructed the kitchen staff to change gloves.
Swiss Chalet recently added wheat to the rice. I posted about that some time ago.

This Thai restaurant is a frantically busy operation, because it sits on the fringe of the Ryerson University Campus, and is close to Yonge & Dundas, Toronto's busiest intersection. Salad King recently renovated, so it is no longer quite so loud and uncomfortable. I include it because I can see it from my office window :-) In my experience, the staff are aware of ingredients and can make recommendations, although usually, the recommendation is Phad Thai only.
Now has a review. Eye readers picked Salad King as the second best indie lunch under $10.

I have ordered from this restaurant many times, usually when we are too tired to cook. Verifying ingredients may be a challenge, depending on when you call and if the person who answers speaks English well-enough. If you can get "no wheat" written on your order, you should be fine. You may get a better explanation while dining in, but I haven't done that in a very long time. A brief review is available here.
El Palenque, a family-owned business, bills itself as an "Authentic Mexican Restaurant." While the waitress was not familiar with Celiac Disease or gluten, she was able to confirm the ingredients of several dishes. Reservations are recommended, but just be sure not to accept a seat in the basement. Even if you are not afflicted from claustrophobia, you'll run away screaming and agitated before you ever get to taste the food. (There is a second location, which I have never visited: 9 Milvan Avenue (Weston Road and Finch), Toronto, 416-740-9718). Now has a lengthy review.

New York Fries, various locations, including two in the Eaton CentreNYF is my emergency lunch (when I haven't brought anything and I am rushed for time). According to Celiac Canada's Fast Food Fries list, which includes some information on toppings, NYF are fine. I think the staff at the Eaton Centre's north location is beginning to recognize me.

I have managed to get a gluten-free meal every time I have dined there. I doubt if there are ever any vegetarian gluten-free items, but you may want to check.
I have not been to this restaurant for quite some time, but the menu suggest possibilities.
Fresh is a completely vegetarian juice bar with food counter. Milk and cheese products are clearly labeled, and the menu promises no hidden milk ingredients in any dishes.
Unfortunately, most dishes--even Rice Bowls--contain wheat products (usually tamari or soy sauce). You can find a few gluten-free items, especially salads, but the choices are slim. There is usually only one rice bowl I can eat. The vast array of juices and shakes, however, may make Juice for Life useful.

Pakoras are made with 100% chick pea flour; Papadums are made with 100% lentil flour; no wheat products are present in any curry or sauce (please verify this information when you call the restaurant: you may also want to inquire about cross-contamination). The Factory has a small, but nice, patio out back.
David left a comment on the old site suggesting that the food was likely contaminated. Since I haven't been back to this restaurant in ages, I can't offer much more advice or context. It's probably best to ask before you go.
Update: I just walked past and noticed that they are moving to 958 Bay Street, reopening at the end of February.
As with the majority of Indian restaurants, most of the food is wheat-free and gluten-free. I have confirmed this on my visits. Indian Flavour uses no commercially-prepared sauces, and avoids MSG and other additives. The menu includes a good selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The most popular option is probably the lunch buffet, which offers a minimum of seven dishes. Toronto Life calls Indian Flavour " Toronto’s most successful Indian self-serve." ZagatSurvey gives praise for this restaurant's "great vegetarian menu."

Biryani House has opened a new location just off Yonge Street, at Wellesley. The food is really excellent, and I have been able to confirm ingredients with no trouble. In my experience, none of the curries contain any wheat. As usual, please ask.
The last time I was there, the only thing off-limits was the naan.

Update (April 30, 2008): I have heard that Debu Saha has sold the Biryani House on Wellesley, but it still seems to operate under the same name.
Annapurna is a South Indian/Sri Lankan vegetarian restaurant inspired by Sri Chinmoy. Its specializes in Southern Indian poori-based vegetarian dishes, an amazing number of which are gluten-free. Annapurna is an economical and very casual restaurant that also offers take-out and catering. Masala Dosai, made of rice and lentil flours, is only $5.99. All milk ingredients are clearly indicated, and many of the dishes are dairy-free. The staff is able to provide accurate information about ingredients, and could even answer my question about cross-contamination of fried foods.

Hi, I plan to delete the gluten-free pages I keep at http://www.ryerson.ca/~bcameron/gft/. Instead, I will maintain only this blog. The reason is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to edit html pages in a timely way. A blog offers far greater flexibility. The new version of Blogger supports Labels or Categories (see column to right) and that makes navigation in the blog much easier. Also, a blog permits easier exchange of comments and feedback.
